Newsletter     August 2000      Academic Taekwondo

  Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to welcome all new and returning students to our 2000-2001 Taekwondo training.

We will set many new goals in the areas of physical fitness, endurance, self-discipline, public presentations, and technical skills. Some of the short-term goals include learning new/basic techniques and combinations, Korean vocabulary and the Taekwondo codes of ethics, which culminate into promoting to the next belt level. With our two hours per week training in class, plus 10-15 minutes daily practice at home, these goals can be attained in 6-8 weeks.

The long term goals include continuous improvements in physical strength and techniques, leadership skills, self-discipline, patience, respect, attainment of a Black Belt, or even a National Champion’s title.

- On a quest to be our best,

We will strive to train with Black Belt Excellence!

Marika Powell

Thank You

Special thanks to our 8th grade Black Belt student Joseph Greene for volunteering his time to assist our Taekwondo classes three times a week during the 2000 Summer Camp.

Each member of our National Competition Team placed among the top 10 in the nation at the U.S. 20th National Junior Taekwondo  Championships, held in San Antonio, Texas, on July 10-15, 2000. The six-day event had approximately 4 ,000 competitors between the ages 6-17.

Suneel Chakravorty placed 5th,, Sunray Martina and Zach Trider (a former Weiss School Student) placed 6th ,  Joseph Greene, Tatsuaki Hayashi, Hidemi Hayashi, and Sanjay Chakravorty placed among the top 10 competitors in their divisions.

 Arielle Sabatino wins GOLD

In order to compete at the National Level the student must first qualify for the State Team by winning either a gold, silver, or bronze medal at the official State Championships. This year only gold and silver medallists qualified to represent the State of Florida at the Junior Olympics.

Congratulations!

Taekwondo Hand Book

Each student will receive a Taekwondo handbook, which contains all the background information your child will need during his/her training at the Weiss School. This handbook is used as a reference guide for home practice of techniques, blocking combinations, basic forms, philosophy, required Korean vocabulary, Taekwondo codes of ethics, testing and rank promotion requirements.

Please Note:     The lower grade students will need parents’ help in studying the background information and learning the Taekwondo school rules.
