Newsletter     June 2000      Academic Taekwondo

Dear Parents and Students,

Looking back at the 1999-2000 school year, we can be very proud of our many accomplishments. The students made remarkable records, topping all previous years, in areas of technique development, responsibility, competition arenas, teamwork, and leadership.   It is amazing how many excellent leaders emerge, when given the opportunity.

Congratulations!

Our final promotion graduation for this school year took place on Saturday, May 20. Nearly 80 students advanced to a new belt level.

The visiting Black Belt examiners, Master Roy Washington from Superior Taekwondo Academy, Lantana; Master Alfredo Rojas from Pil-Sung Taekwondo, West Palm Beach;  Instructor Ginger Palhof from US Tae-kwondo College, Lake Worth, and assistant instructor Zach Trider from Academic Taekwondo gave top scores for our students’ technical skills, attitude and perseverance.

Thank You

I would like to extend my warmest thanks and gratitude to the Weiss School PTA, all parents and faculty for your support, encouragement and cooperation throughout the school year.  Our progress was possible through your active involvement.

Uniforms for 2000-2001 School Year

Each student received a Taekwondo uniform and Patch order form in his/her "Tuesday Envelope". Please note the deadline (below) order forms. Our uniforms are made of high quality materials with six rows of stitching along the cuffs. Special made pants with full-length panel for comfortable wear and unrestricted moves come with elastic waistband and draw string.

If your child has outgrown his/her Taekwondo uniform, please donate it to the Weiss School.

Looking for a Do-Jang?

When looking for a Do-Jang, you should keep several things in mind.

What is your long-term goal, and what do you want out of TKD?

What style of Taekwondo is taught at the do-jang?

Is the instructor at least 4th dan and Kukkiwon certified?  If not, who promotes the students and signs the Geup certificates?

Does the do-jang teach traditional Taekwondo forms, sparring, self-defense, one-step sparring, philosophy, history, traditions, do-jang etiquette, Korean terminology, etc.?

Which forms (Poomse) are taught at this school? (Our school teaches the WTF Taegeuk, and WTF Black Belt forms).

Does the do-jang participate in competitions? If so, what type  (WTF, ATF, AAU, ATA, ITF, etc.)?

Remember, there are hundreds of Taekwondo instructors who have created their own styles, rankings, and organizations. If you aim to become a Black Belt, you should make sure that the school you train in is able obtain a Kukkiwon Black Belt Certification for its students. Currently, our NGB, the United States Tae-kwondo Union, and the WTF, World Taekwondo Federation, which governs Taekwondo worldwide, recognize only Kukkiwon certified black belts as Black Belts.
